Young musicians age 8 to 18 are welcome to join us. All musicians must be well started on their instrument, able to produce clear sound and move through the range of pitches for their instrument. While most musicians are fiddlers, we are open to other instruments such as viola, bass, guitar, accordion, and recorder, as well as the traditional nyckelharpa and cittra. If you are unsure if your instrument is appropriate for our ensemble, please contact our Director.
Activities in rehearsal time vary. At some rehearsals kids are split into smaller groups for more individual attention; at other rehearsals the majority of time is spent teaching new tunes. All rehearsals include some time spent on movement and styling for dance, and at least some time spent playing together as a large group. Both the Director and Assistant Director attend rehearsals, coach musicians, plan repertoire and teach new tunes.
We encourage visitors! Rehearsals are generally held on the second and fourth Sundays of the month between September and June, from 4P to 5:30PM at St. Dunstan's Church, 722 N 145th St, Shoreline, WA. Please check with us about when you might visit.
Children are strongly encouraged to visit before committing to participation. This gives the child an opportunity to see how rehearsal works, gives the directors a chance to meet your son/daughter, and gives you the opportunity to ask questions in person.
Participation in the Seattle Lilla Spelmanslag requires that you fill out the Registration Form, available here, and pay the annual participation fees. Fees for the 2015-2016 season are $230/year. We offer a 10% discount for a second child in any family participating. Limited scholarships may be available by application to the Seattle Lilla Spelmanslag. For more information on Scholarships, contact our Director.
Musicians are expected to attend rehearsals regularly, and to attend a large portion of scheduled performances. Because we are a performance-oriented group, making gigs is integral to the success of the group. It is through performing that we build teamwork, gain confidence and develop presence.
Parents are asked to support children in practicing and to participate actively in the organization. Because the Lilla Spelmanslag is an all volunteer organization, parent participation is critical. All parents and Directors meet in September, January and May on the second Tuesday of the month. The Lilla Spelmanslag Board, consisting of 3 parent volunteers and the Directors, meets once per month to plan and make business decisions for the group.
