This year is my tenth as Director of the ‘Lag, making it Version 10.0. One could also consider that we have ten fabulous young people playing this year, ranging in age from 7 to 17. Those ten kids come to rehearsal eager to be with each other, to work at the craft of playing music, and to have some fun. They keep me on my toes, and never fail to surprise me with their hard work, commitment to playing well, and joy that comes through their music.
As I consider this tenth season, I see our growth, and how much we have yet to accomplish. We have become a stronger organization by gaining 501(c)3 status and by growing and streamlining our fundraising efforts. We have built a partnership St. Dunstan’s Episcopal Church in Shoreline, where we rehearse and hold our Annual Concert (more about that below...) Our social media reach is growing daily, connecting us with Nordic music enthusiasts around the globe. We have toured overseas twice, first in Sweden in 2013, and in Denmark last summer. Yet to come are more outreach to public schools, increasing our membership, building our financial support network, and my next big dream, a tour in Norway.
Over the course of these ten years, we have also benefitted from the help and support of some amazing musicians who were touring or visiting in Seattle. They included Kalle Almlöf, Kristian Bugge and Mette Jensen, Antti and Arto Järvela, Peter Uhrbrand and Ole Moritzen, Olav Mjelva and Anders Hall. Tunes from each of these fine instrumentalists remain in our repertoire from year to year. The time they spend with the kids are times those young musicians never forget, the happy stories becoming part of our collective history.
How do we go forward from here to Version 11.0 and beyond? We do that with your help. Come hear a handful of those tunes we got from mentors, and much more great music at our Annual Fundraising Concert on Sunday, March 11, 4P at St. Dunstan’s Episcopal Church in Shoreline. Tickets are available from our members at $10, or at the door, $12. Refreshments will be available for purchase at intermission. Contact us for tickets at firstname.lastname@example.org. If you are not able to attend, but would like to contribute, you may make a donation by clicking the Donate Now button on the left of this page.
